Indian Students Continue to Prefer USA for Higher Education

USA Remains Top Choice

The latest Student Global Mobility Index (SGMI) report by Oxford International underscores the enduring popularity of the United States among Indian students seeking higher education opportunities abroad. Despite concerns about affordability, safety, and security, a significant 69% of surveyed Indian students still favor the USA as their preferred destination, followed closely by the UK at 54%.

Factors Influencing Decisions

The SGMI report delves into the key factors influencing students’ decisions when selecting a study destination. Quality of education and university reputation emerge as primary determinants. Among Indian students opting for the USA, 45% cited the quality of education, while 42% valued university reputation. Similarly, in the UK, 59% emphasized education quality, and 61% considered university reputation as pivotal factors.

Parental Influence

The report highlights the significant role of parents or guardians in shaping students’ choices regarding higher education. An overwhelming 71% of Indian students acknowledged the influence of their parents or guardians in their decision-making process. This trend of parental involvement is observed across other countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, and Vietnam, where familial guidance plays a crucial role.

Insights from Oxford International

Mohit Gambir, Managing Director of Oxford International Education Services, emphasized the report’s significance in understanding global higher education aspirations. Gambir noted that despite concerns, the USA and the UK continue to remain the top study destinations for Indian students. He highlighted the role of parental guidance, underscoring the familial impact on educational pursuits and decision-making processes.

Comprehensive Study

The SGMI study, conducted in collaboration with THE Knowledge Partnership, surveyed over 500 current and prospective students from key markets including India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Nigeria. The comprehensive nature of the study provides valuable insights into global student mobility patterns, preferences, and trends.

In addition to highlighting the enduring preference for the USA and the UK, the SGMI report unveils several other noteworthy findings:

  • Affordable Course Fees: While the UK attracts 28% of Indian students for its relatively affordable course fees, Australia (20%), Canada (18%), and the USA (9%) also garner attention in this aspect.
  • Scholarship Opportunities: Australia emerges as the top choice for scholarships among aspiring students, with 34% expressing interest, followed closely by Canada (32%), the UK (27%), and the USA (23%).
  • Engagement with Higher Education Agents: A higher proportion of students from India (35%) and Nigeria rely on higher education agents for guidance in their decision-making process compared to counterparts from Pakistan (23%) and Vietnam (22%).
