Since the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 brought attention to the event, at least 28 states, Washington, DC, and the federal government have proclaimed Juneteenth a public holiday, according to Pew Research.

What is Open and Closed on Juneteenth 2025

Shops

On Juneteenth, most large stores and supermarkets will be open. Target and Walmart will be open during regular business hours. Numerous grocery stores will also be open, including Kroger, Costco, and the roughly two dozen businesses that Kroger owns.

While stores will remain open as usual on Juneteenth 2025, the majority of Walgreens pharmacies will be closed, except a few additional pharmacies and 24-hour locations. CVS pharmacies will be open, despite some locations having limited hours.

The Postal Services

The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Juneteenth 2025 since it is a holiday.

All FedEx and UPS services, however, will be accessible and operational.

Services Related to Finance

In its place, other states can celebrate with a day of observation or other events.

According to local news, the administration of Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia, for instance, announced that state employees would not be granted the day off on Juneteenth, as has been the custom for the last few years. The governor will instead urge all West Virginians to pause and remember the abolition of slavery in the United States.
