Instagram Brings Algorithm Features to Your Main Feed
Instagram is giving users more control over the content they see with the expansion of its “Your Algorithm” feature to the main feed. The update allows people to directly influence the platform’s recommendation system by selecting topics they enjoy and filtering out those they don’t.
The topic list is initially generated based on a user’s activity within the app. As users edit and refine these preferences, Instagram’s algorithm adjusts the content recommendations it delivers across the platform.
The company first introduced a limited test of “Your Algorithm” for Reels in October 2025 before expanding the feature to the Explore feed in April. Now, Instagram is bringing the same customization tools to the main feed, offering users more influence over their in-app experience.
The move is also likely to strengthen Instagram’s public image by addressing one of the most common criticisms of social media platforms—the feeling that algorithms completely dictate what users see without their input.
Instagram’s New Algorithm Update Gives Users More Control
Although the feature adds a new level of customization, many experts believe only a small percentage of users will actively use it. However, simply providing the option may help reduce complaints about algorithm-driven feeds and improve user perception.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri recently shared his thoughts on the evolution of AI-powered recommendations, arguing that the shift toward automated content discovery has gradually reduced user control and weakened the social nature of online interactions.
According to Mosseri, following accounts once played a major role in shaping a person’s experience on Instagram. As AI recommendations expanded across the main feed, that influence declined, leaving users to feel as though the platform was making choices on their behalf.
He believes this imbalance contributes to the discomfort some people feel about social media today. Rather than disliking the content itself, many users feel disconnected because the experience is increasingly designed for them instead of by them.
AI-Powered Recommendations Could Redefine Social Media
Mosseri suggests that artificial intelligence will eventually solve this problem by enabling deeper personalization. Advances in AI could allow users to shape not only what content appears but also how the app itself functions.
He predicts that within a few years, AI systems could generate entirely customized experiences in real time, adapting the structure, features, and recommendations of Instagram to match each individual’s interests and habits.
This vision points toward a future where every user could interact with a slightly different version of the same app. AI would continuously refine the experience, creating unique content journeys tailored to personal preferences.
